It is my observation that in every generation there are innovations that the generation before has a hard time relating too. I had a grandmother that had never flown and who could not understand how I could fly all over the world for my job. The general position of the older generation is one of fear. She feared the plane would fall out of the sky. Parents today fear the social tech is going to cripple their kids. There is no evidence that this is true, yet parents still worry. The reality is that social tech and mobile devices are a blessing and a curse - depending on the proper and healthy use. Your kids will be different than you. You are different than your folks. They set boundaries for you, and you need to do the same for you kids...

Scott, I keep thinking about this post, and I wonder where you think we will be in 5 years time with our kids? My children are in the middle of this change, and being so they do not even comprehend that there was media or computing before the social era.

My children assume that everyone has always had Twitter and Facebook for communications. They find it hard to understand that we used to watch DVDs without the Live feature where we can chat with other people around the world watching the same movie.

It clearly does not need Microsoft Office. It was never designed to run Microsoft Office. Since the iPad is designed to fit in between the smartphone and a notebook, it clearly should not be running Microsoft Office, especially without a physical keyboard. I personally don't think you are going to see any tablet running Microsoft Office unless it's some tabletized version that Microsoft decides to build. I honestly don't think that HP is going to put its Slate into production. Microsoft Office wasn't designed to run on a touch device, either.

If you need Microsoft Office sort of on the iPad, Citrix offers a thin client that can manage that so you'll have access to all your documents on a remote computer.

I have a HTC dream and i love it. It was a tough decision between that and an IPhone. Now it is Kindle, Convertible PC with multi-touch, or an Ipad. I would miss MS Office, and for an ereader kindle is the the lightest to carry. However, I was disappointed and bored with the sony ereader. I do not see any point in having access to the internet if the Ipad does not have Flash. The kindle is 250.00 and the Ipad is 600.00 without 3G. I find myself leading to the kindle because I spend enough time looking at a computer screen. However, why pay american prices for books? Apple seems to be all about marketing and controlling the rights to the cool apps, so you feel like you need one to have access to certain apps.

There are some useful apps related to doing work, like TimeTracker to keep tabs on how much time is being spent with a client, or on each part of a job (there are many apps like this now)

Raw productivity like Word/Excel is an area that will grow with the larger screen. Even Pages/Numbers/Keynote that apple has shipped is more of a proof of concept, rather than something to really do work in. I do imagine that they will improve quite a bit over time.

I look forward to more apps that allow mixed input, typing and drawing.
Having figured out an easy way to print (email to my home or work system with a certain item in the subject matter like [print] or [laser]/[inkjet] depending on what you may have available (In this regard, I am working on a more advanced processing of the emails so it just prints the contents of the email, rather than everything)

I'm also looking at getting a Car mount for turn by turn navigation, something it will be easy to grab the iPad out of so it doesn't get stolen, plus for use while I'm out doing things.

Of course there are the obvious things like book reading/magazines, content consumption, but trying to think of the "out of the box" aspects of such a device is what I find interesting.

In fairness on of the options during iTunes setup is register as new device. As anew device none of the saved iPhone apps is loaded on the iPad.

Although I'd be loath to extend an MS Word dependency to yet another platform, I can understand why folks would benefit from one if MS ever decided to make one. I think the best way to handle the awkwardness of text revision would be to include a mousepad with the keyboard accessories.

Other than the text selection issue when using a keyboard accessory, I really like seeing the whole document when the iPad is docked in portrait mode. I've found a nice swivel stand that switches screen orientation swiftly and accommodates my folio case and charging cable.

Good luck with your iPad.

When you set up your iPad for the first time, installing your iPhone apps is an option that you can accept or reject. It's actually kind of easy to miss, but you could have kept them from being transferred over. I missed it in setting my iPad up, but when I set up my wife's iPad, I caught it.

You mention the need for Microsoft Office. Did you try out any of the iWork apps? These can be helpful based on your needs, especially Pages for light word processing. But if you need to export Keynote to PowerPoint or Numbers to Excel, you're out of luck. Hopefully, some of iWork's deficiencies will be addressed in future releases.

"Clearly needs Microsoft Office. "

Sorry, Microsoft Office is too bloated even on my desktop computer. It's silly to expect that you're going to need all the features of that behemoth on a content CONSUMPTION device.

However, if you can't live without it, use LogMeIn or GoToMyPC on the iPad to access your home computer. That way, you'll have constant access to your main computer with all its files and applications without having to carry a full-blown laptop (and mess with syncing files all the time).

Your Iphone statements are hilarious and fully agree! Nowadays most people have already 20 subscriptions for phone, cable, internet, gym in their life's and it's weird to see how everybody can afford all this. But who knows where this will go in the next decade :)

I could not agree more Scott. I cannot wait until Sprint brings out their Android phone next year. I wonder if Apple would bring some of the Linux based Android OS functionality over to the Mac OSX based iPhone? It wouldn't really be all that hard. Both are POSIX based...

Scott, with the technology being so robust on the gaming platforms, I still cannot figure out why a Google or another large player hasn't bought Blizzard. World of Warcraft is a game, true, but that world could easily be morphed into a very serious virtual world for business applications and entertainment combined.

Scott, i keep coming back to your 3 Screens and the idea that we are pushing those three screen together faster than anyone would have seen even 5 years ago.

I wonder how long until those 3 screens are just really different views of the same technology, not three technologies, just three different sizes.

Scott,

Thanks for getting some news out about this great tool. I was already experimenting with this when it came out in the .NET framework awhile back. I can personally attest to the fact that it is a challenge to figure out. But it was also worth it from the instant value add. We are planning on incorporating it the first time a good opportunity presents itself.
